"The opportunity to dedicate an entire year to a single project has been the highlight of my time here. To have time to learn, think and explore new ways of seeing is a massive privilege."

What is the title of your graduate show work?

Atur.

What is the project about?

My short documentary film follows a feeling rather than a traditional narrative.

It features a father and son attempting to navigate the turmoils of parenthood and youth, whilst their shared identity both blossoms and isolates them, albeit together.

This film presents an opportunity for us to tap into the internal dichotomy of loneliness and connection, something that I believe is simultaneously present in all of us.

How do you best like to work?

I find that as filmmakers we are always taking away from people. Taking stories, feelings, images.

For this reason, I find my practice to be ever evolving towards something that acts as a dialogue between both the filmmaker and the participant.

As a documentary director and editor, I find myself conducting my best practice in a fully immersive environment, whether that be in the editing suite or, if the situation allows, living with the participants of the film. This allows for me to fuse both participatory and observational cinema together, creating documentary that simultaneously gives participants autonomy and indulges in a clear sense of reality.

Can you tell us about some of the things that inspire you and that have influenced you during your studies?

As a filmmaker, I believe you must be a collaborator. I really don't see it working any other way.

Our artform, in many ways, falls at the intersection of both technology and, in its traditional sense, a craft. Meaning there are a lot of different skillsets involved! Therefore, my inspiration and influence always come from people, the community in which you decide to make a film, whether that be crew, technicians or even suppliers.

What have been the highlights of your time at ECA and living in Edinburgh?

The opportunity to dedicate an entire year to a single project has been the highlight of my time here. To have time to learn, think and explore new ways of seeing is a massive privilege.

Do you have any plans for after graduation?

Quite simply, make more documentaries. I'd like to do another short doc and then try my hands at a feature. Further down the line I'd like to explore directing a fictional short. I have a script if people are looking... In the meantime, I'll be doing a bit of editing other people’s work.
