Project description

As Charles Darwin said in 1845, 'Nothing, not even the wind that blows is so unstable as the level of the earth'. It highlights the flux and the transition in time of the earth, namely, the geological anomalies following deep-time evolution. Based on this theory, the designer tried to make the relationship between people and the landscape possibly closer by evoking the memory of geological anomalies as a reality.

Context

After humans settle in the island, there were several large-scale volcanic eruptions, of which the volcanic eruption in 1761 was the longest lasting and had the greatest impact on the site's topography. Its eruption vent is located in Santa Barbara Volcano, that is, Misterios Negros. These areas covered in pink are the 1761 Basaltic Fissure Zone. The lava flowed through these areas, causing part of the site to collapse, and over time, the lava solidifies, forming these tubes and caves and, a kind of unique underground geological landscape.

In fact, after investigation, it was found that the unknown landscape of the underground often does not allow everyone to have a pleasant visiting experience. As the depth increases, so does the darkness, and people tend to subconsciously generate fear.

The designer is trying to concatenate existing lava tubes based on existing routes and trails. The entire lava cave system can actually be connected one by one through the existing routes and proposed routes to form a circular tour route, which is convenient for people to reach.

Proposals

One of primary task for the landscape architects is to protect the landscapes from pollution and ecological destruction (protect the atmosphere, hydrosphere and biosphere), and at the same time highlighting the importance of the lithosphere where rocks of the Earth sit.

The Earth is dynamic, so the lithosphere keeps changing with the movement of the Earth and time going. That is to say, if the landscape project is inspired by the evolution in lithosphere, that project also needs to have a continuous narrative in the changes of time and geological formations. In this project, the designer tells a story from the origin, movement to the solidification of lava flow along the flow of people, giving visitors a complete picture of the geological changes that have taken place on the site over a long period of time. That story will be unfolded in following three sites.
