"Making physical models with a simpler materials palette and simple methods of working that do not always require workshop facilities: I think it has brought a sense of clarity to the work produced."
A model of a building
What is your graduation project about?

The UK has thrown away approximately 6.4 million tons of edible food in 2018 according to WRAP (Waste and Resources Action Programme).

In our society living costs are rising, food quality is decreasing, and food poverty is on the rise.

This project facilitates two charities that address the education and active reduction of food waste by teaching communities how to grow their own food and creating meals from surplus food to provide healthy meals for people that need them.

The ethos of the project extends into the choice of construction materials by using reclaimed timber from Glasgow to build within an existing building located in Leith, which the project will be housed in.

How do you best like to work?

Starting an initial investigation to understand the site and then moving on to understanding the brief and seeing what angle to approach the program from.

I use models to think through my design, test ideas and study compositions. I then use a variety of architectural precedents and sometimes readings to develop my design, working between drawings and models to resolve the project.

Can you tell us about some of the things which inspire you and your work?

My daily life, architectural precedents, and meaningful conversations with people inspire me. Furthermore, participating in some of the visiting professors workshops at ESALA have inspired my work in my graduation project.

What have been the highlights of your time at ECA and Edinburgh?

Making models in the workshops and having good conversations with tutors. As well as not being far from any of the cultural attractions in Edinburgh. Everything is so close and there is always something to do. I have also enjoyed wandering around the city with my camera.

How have the events over the past two years affected your work?

It has not affected the work as much as it has affected the way I work, trading the studio environment (in third year) and printed drawings for Microsoft Teams meetings and Miro boards.

Making physical models with a simpler materials palette and simple methods of working that do not always require workshop facilities: I think it has brought a sense of clarity to the work produced.

Have you got plans for after graduating?

After graduating, I would like to work in an architecture practice as a part 1 architectural assistant and further develop my photography hobby.
