My work is inspired by ecological recovery and processes of decay. Imagery of plants and dead animals is gathered on walks in the Pentlands and parks and beaches around Edinburgh as well as from internet sources. I'm interested in ideas about rewilding, and what place death has within it: the importance of allowing nutrients to return to the soil to nurture new growth. Optimism is a big part of my practise and several of the paintings are based on successful rewilding projects: it reassures me in a world full of bad news about the climate that successful efforts are being made to recover biodiversity.
