My enquiry into plant life began as a personal investigation of colour. With increasing pressures from the effects of climate change, my practice draws on scientific references to biodiversity, exploring organic forms and expression of colour. Whilst spending more time interacting with the outdoors, I developed an appreciation of our natural world and found myself photographing colourful botanicas and their complex structures. These forms became a showcase for my exploration of colour.
I use plant morphology to inform the compositions of my paintings. Like pollinators, I am drawn to vibrant colours and natural forms; they guide my process and medium. It is why rich, saturated, and permanent pigments from oil pastel and acrylic paint take precedence over other materials, why I layer colour to create more hues- to extend the natural palette.
