Project description

My enquiry into plant life began as a personal investigation of colour. With increasing pressures from the effects of climate change, my practice draws on scientific references to biodiversity, exploring organic forms and expression of colour. Whilst spending more time interacting with the outdoors, I developed an appreciation of our natural world and found myself photographing colourful botanicas and their complex structures. These forms became a showcase for my exploration of colour.

I use plant morphology to inform the compositions of my paintings. Like pollinators, I am drawn to vibrant colours and natural forms; they guide my process and medium. It is why rich, saturated, and permanent pigments from oil pastel and acrylic paint take precedence over other materials, why I layer colour to create more hues- to extend the natural palette.

Water of Leith

Water of Leith is a series of four paintings, each unique, much like the stretch of the river they correspond to. From source to sea, Edinburgh’s hidden gem is a crucial part of the city’s heritage and now home to numerous plant species. The paintings, and their preliminary oil pastel drawings, are artistic documents of diverse colour and shape in nature - a display of community, biodiversity, and harmony. So too is the Water of Leith video collaboration which explores this journey through time, motion, and sound. It combines music, painting and photography to create intense interactions of colour and sound in a harmonious digital performance. My ambition is to apply my methods to other locations, to give awareness of changing environments and continue to create these bold, joyous, elating festivals of life.
