Sexual harassment has been reported at affecting 1/3 of the population. The reported murders of Sarah Everard and Sabina Nessa inspired an outpour of support, sparking protests and social media campaigns. Education and awareness are frequently mentioned when understanding how sexual violence can be prevented, but often this is targeted toward the “victims”. We are told not to walk home alone, to check our drinks and to cover up. Perpetrators must be held accountable, as well as the culture of toxic masculinity which often normalises and enables actions and language which allows sexual violence to continue.
The aim of my collection is to create a conversation around the topic of sexual violence. 31% of sexual harassment occurs in clubs & bars. In order to create this conversation, I have collected a series of quotes from people at the pub, parties and clubs that relate to the culture of toxic masculinity, alongside written articles. These quotes have inspired my drawings which have developed into screen printed wallpapers. I have experimented with UV pigment and thermochromic binder to add a multifunctional element to my wallpapers. My thermochromic print responds to heat. When touched with the heat of your hands the binder becomes invisible and the true message underneath can be seen. Under UV light certain areas of my wallpapers light up and shine out brightly making them stand out in the context of a dark club. Conversation is the key to change and education.
