Artist statement

My work investigates themes of tradition, vanity, sexualisation and mental health through a variety of mediums and materials.

There is an expressive side to my art, relating to materiality, and the meditative qualities of painting, with a bodily connotation that links abstraction, to the social and personal concerns that shape my work.

I believe that we can never truly address issues like gender based violence and rape culture, until we are able to address the objectification that is deeply ingrained within our culture and history. Much of my work stems from the disparity and impossibility of this situation.

Through my varied practice, I explore how interconnected issues like tradition, glamour, beauty ideals, and over sexualisation, impact our experience of identity and mental health.

Am I Pretty Yet?

The daily bombardment of hyper sexualised, hyper glamourised imagery is so accepted in our lives, that we may not see its deep reaching effects. Entire industries are built on our ingrained feelings of inadequacy. We cultivate a culture of vanity and celebrity that sells objectification in the guise of empowerment - preying on those who have learned to equate their self worth with being wanted.

The Undress

My painting work is concerned with composition and colour - representing mental health through exploration of balance and imbalance.

Rust Works.

I see a tragic beauty in rust. Like wounds, emotional and physical, rust bleeds into the surfaces with which it comes into contact, leaving a mark, long after the wound has healed. Societally and individually, we are constantly changing, but like these obsolescent rusted objects, we were shaped in the past. Attitudes, feelings, traditions change, but their impacts remain.

Projections and reflections

I am interested in white because of its potential for projection - both literal and metaphorical. White is a colour/shade with many associations, glamour, wealth, purity, innocence, religion. The soiling of white garments is a recurring theme within my work.
