Shawn Nayar is a multi-disciplinary artist who weaves physical, digital, and performative mediums into collaborative erotic inquiries. His work investigates the fetishisation and sexualisation of the body, enacting complex expressions of sensuality through a performative persona. This persona embodies the visual culture of the artist’s Indian heritage alongside notions of the abject that are intimately connected to his queerness. The duality of this persona imbues his practice with enticing contradictions and provides a critical framework for him to operate within as a solo artist and as a collaborator.
In his collaborative inquiries, Nayar plays the role of director and artist. As the director, he facilitates a visual dialogue between collaborators - organising workshops as well as activating gallery spaces and nightclubs with interactive works that encourage audience members to participate. As the artist, he mediates the visual dialogue produced by using his body as a canvas - inviting participants to leave their mark on his ‘body of work.’
