Design and Digital Media: Final Project

In the project, I created three 3D illustrations with looping animations to represent the different aspects of alienation that were brought about by digital technologies and to explore the possible influence of technologies on their users. In the 3D illustrations, the different manifestations of alienation to the users were embodied as figures of animals to reveal certain characteristics of such phenomenon. The animal characters in each scene were rendered in 2D visual style to express the idea of being trapped inside a 2D space and the digital realm even though they are surrounded by 3D environments. 

Chameleon Under the Lens

In my project, I use a chameleon under the lens to represent the aspect of reification and alienation from one’s images and appearance on social media, as the control of the judgment and standard of one’s appearance was unconsciously given over to digital technologies while ignored the limitation and distortion from such media. I created a chameleon who is facing the camera and putting on makeup and neglected distortion of her surrounding environments. I created a physical distortion of the 3D models in the room to represent the distortion under the lens. The fish-eye effect of the scene and the circular edge of the scene imitates a camera that is focusing. The sense of peeping at the chameleon was created, and the lens of the camera in this case would look like a peephole to the viewers. The such design reflected the feature of social media that provided a platform to peep at the life of other users. 

Frog in the Desert

I used a frog in a desert to try to illustrate the complex and contradictive relationship between one’s emotion and recognition of one’s physical environment and the virtual space. The frog in the scene was pictured as a traveller in a tent in the desert, who's trying to simulate the environment of the rainforest by looking at the project and showering with a bottle. I wanted to create contradictions in the scene that could lead to the question of where the frog seems to belong and would lead to the reflections on the relationship between someone and the virtual space, and the relationship between physical and virtual environments.

 Wolf Pack Meeting

I used a wolf pack holding an online meeting through videoconferencing software to express the working method and conditions under technological development. The image of the wolf pack refers to the popular wolf pack theory that is used in the training program and the workplace as a call for team spirit in China. However, such a call for team spirit is sometimes misused by employers; in one of my own experiences of working remotely, employees were asked to open their cameras while working and submit a report of their screen time usage at the end of the day to the employers to prove that they are working, even some people who were under a different time zone. I wanted to create the scene of the wolf pack meeting that could lead to reflection about the concerning working conditions of employees, such as the surveillance of employees and hidden extra working time brought by such technological development.

Design for Interactive Media - Project: Virtual museum

In this project, I created a CAB with artifacts that displayed in a virtual museum. In the interactive virtual exhibition, audience are not only able to zoom in and out to see the details of the case and the microscope, but also able to interact with the exhibits to see how it was assembled and disassembled from the animation.

Game Design Studio - Project: Blue Beard

I created a game based on the narrative of the Blue Beard (1696) by Charles Perrault. The players need to follow the prompts from the note that was left by the ex-wives of Bluebeard and explore the house, find the key to unlock the stair to the attic to discover the true colors of Bluebeard. During this process, the player can find the clues provided by his ex-wife in the house to trigger the ending to escape the house and expose the sin of Bluebeard.

Digital Playgrounds for the Online Public - Project: 3D interactive scene of cyberpunk style apartment

In this project, I represent the ideology and the theme of cyberpunk style in a 3D interactive environment in the shape of a small apartment.
