For my first Graduate project, I reimagined the beloved child's story, "Coraline" by Niel Gaiman, and reinterpreted the setting as a anachronistic dollhouse to draw on the themes of childhood play and fears. I derived inspiration from 1890s fashion, Victorian burlesque and circuses, kitsch aesthetic and childhood memories to design costumes for seven of the stories much loved characters. I was inspired to reimagine this story as I felt both children and adults alike can connect with the themes of adventure, bravery and fear in a home setting and wanted to put my own spin on something I have loved since I was young.
Crinan Wood: Ancient Atlantic Rainforest is a site specific project I was inspired to create after I visited Crinan Wood on the West Coast of Scotland. The natural beauty of the area encouraged me to imagine what a performance piece might look like in the forest and how I could draw an audience there. Inspired by nature, ceremonial Pagan dress and Nick Cave's "Sound Suits", I designed seven costumes influenced by the individual habitats within the area.
