Project description

For my final graduate projects, I wanted to explore different design styles and further my construction knowledge. Midnight Robber by Nalo Hopkinson was chosen as I wanted to focus on a Caribbean story. It is rare to see Caribbean sci-fi in degree work so I enjoyed researching more into my own culture and educating myself and others through my work. The character Tan-Tan  in her Robber Queen costume represents overcoming trauma and self discovery with inspiration taken from the Trinidadian carnival character, The Midnight Robber.

My second project translates the cosmic horror podcast, The Magnus Archives, into a theatre production. There are multiple inhuman and evil characters within the show and they were fun to design for as they had to encapsulate the fears they represent. Nikola Orsinov steals the identities and faces of others as she represents a fear called The Stranger, she is also the ringmaster of a travelling demonic circus. The costume contains many face motifs along with the colour scheme of the traditional big top.
