The project is located in a historic building on the GS campus in Edinburgh - 40George Square, an old building with a collection of historical markings, a rough exterior, and rich colours. There is a more serious atmosphere inside 40GS since it is primarily used as a study space for students and offices for staff. It is a building with clear boundaries to its external environment. I will redesign some of the spaces in 40GS for this project to improve this oppressive atmosphere and integrate 40GS into the community.
As a spatial designer, I believe that the best way to integrate a building into its community and people without altering its exterior is to make a connection between the interior and the exterior of the space, so I will develop this project around the theme of connecting the interior with the exterior. I will be thinking about making the spaces attractive and the boundaries between the inside and the outside of the building invisible to those who enter them. The best way to blur the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces is to allow the outdoor environment to continue indoors, allowing people to enjoy activities and environments indoors that they would normally enjoy outdoors.
