Project description

Located in the high level (11F & 12F) of 40 George Square, CCentre means a creative center. It integrates workshops, exhibition area, and relaxing spaces for people, aiming to stimulate people's imagination and creativity through the interior space. Also, such a public space can help inspire the vitality of the 40 George Square and bring about new energy to the campus.

The interior of CCentre with curved elements is inspired by the contrast with the brutalist style of the building, which creates a softer sense than the original rough straight lines existing in the building. However, in order to achieve harmony with the historic building in the innovation, the materials and colors echo those original things, such as the use of wood and the retention of parts of the original walls.

The main frame of the space is a steel and wood structure with arch hollow, the exterior is wood, and the inner structure is a light steel keel, which simultaneously achieves a solid and beautiful effect. The overall tone of the space is light and bright, creating a comfortable and gentle atmosphere.

PLAN
PLAN

The interior layout of the CCentre is a subtle transformation of the original building to maximize the character of the original building and achieve a combination of old and new.As a result, you can see that there are no new walls. Another reason  is that I choose to use different kinds of floors to divide space function, to make the original narrow interiors wider to the sense.

SECTION

In this part, you can clearly see the section of the space, especially the main structure as well as the workshop area. The main structure is a steel-wood hybrid that runs through two floors, with an arched shape that gives an upward extension. The original stair and lifts are kept, allowing two ways of access to each floor.

EXPLOSION DIAGRAM

The explosion diagram can clearly show the relationship between the original building and the current situation. Most of the windows and walls remain, from which you can easily trace the original architectural features. It is very important  to keep the original architectural features, because this can be the evidence of interior passing time, and it naturally grows a sense of story.

My intention is to create innovation through contrast, then the characteristics of the original building will be highlighted again. And the spatial strategy is to add curves to the straight lines, such as the arch structure, curved ground, rounded furniture, etc.

STRUCTURE

The main structure is composed of parts as shown in the figure, which is a steel-wood mixed structure. The exterior layer is wood and the inner layer is supported by a light steel keel. The inner and outer wrapped form gives it both robustness and beauty.
