The University of Edinburgh is a very comprehensive college with students from all over the world who have been studying and living here for a long or short period of time. Some students may feel lonely in unfamiliar surroundings and classmates, and some students may be eager to meet new friends. I plan to design a student communication centre to allow students to socialise and enrich their lives.
40 George Square is surrounded by the main library and academic buildings. The rigorous learning environment needs a place to relax , and as there is no student cafeteria on campus, I will design a food hub which will include a kitchen, baking classroom, food market and many other functions. Students will be able to cook by themselves and share their food with others, as well as taking part in cooking classes, which will facilitate interaction and collaboration between students and help them to meet new people or strengthen friendships.
I developed the project following my personal manifesto, which is based on a human-centred approach, taking into account functionality and individuality. By paying attention to the psychology, physicality and behaviour of different students, I segmented the floor plan into different forms of space; open, private, independent and collaborative. In addition, I created an atmosphere of freedom, relaxation and security to meet the spiritual function of socialising.
