Project Overview and Aims

The aim of the proposal is to create a market place that draws members of the public to the otherwise primarily residential, Gorgie area of Edinburgh. Several market places already exist in the city of Edinburgh but are situated in the centre so there is an opportunity to create a new market place out-with this.

The new Gorgie market will be a more permanent market than existing market places and will have a combination of external and internal areas with different levels of permanence in terms of there set up and opening hours. The existing building will become the most permanent area with market places that act more like shops that will be open all week round. There will also be external stalls that can be hired out to market vendors and set up as the vendor sees fit. These, when not in use by vendors, can host beches etc. providing shaded external areas where people can relax.

The project focuses heavily on the reuse of parts and considers the full life cycle of the building elements, Deconstruction, reconstruction and consideration for the future are principle to the development of the scheme. Firstly existing buildings are de-constructed carefully and the parts from this are used to create the new structures on site. In the creation of the new structures the future deconstruction is considered so bolted connections and such like are used ensuring the structures are easily de-constructed.

Phase 1 - Deconstruction

The project begins with the deconstruction of certain buildings on site. This sets the basis for the project with the parts from the deconstruction being reused in new structures that will be created on the site. The following drawings will explore the reasoning behind the deconstruction and the steps that are necessary in the process of deconstruction.

The Gorgie Market - The Reconstruction of Parts

The parts from the demolition of existing buildings were then used to create the new structures on site. Some of the existing buildings that have not been demolished have been modified to create more space and clear routes throughout the building.

Future Deconstruction

The project focuses on the circular reuse of material so in the reconstruction of parts the future deconstruction has been considered. The following drawings explore the process of deconstruction and the parts available from this.
