Project Brief

Situated along the Kirkgate, this proposal is designed to remedy the growing issue of food poverty in Leith. Local food bank efforts will be given an established space for serving the community, which will combine the provisioning of food with culinary education. It is hoped the nearby Michelin star restaurants will contribute to this education – sharing valuable skills that will help to bridge the gentrifying divide in Leith. The proposal will also consolidate existing efforts in the community to grow their own food, by providing adequate gardening space and easy access to the Leith Community Croft for donations to the food bank.

Structure

The strength of glulam was needed to create a grand communal eating and cooking space which could rival Leith’s rich heritage of ceremonial buildings as its own civic landmark. However, to prevent the structure from becoming too over-awing it was designed to arch inwards and upwards – to hug the occupant whilst also raising their aspirations upward.
