Brighton born artist Rowena Hutchinson (b. 1998) uses sculptural materials to blur the boundaries between painting and sculpture. She explores the lasting impacts of loss and trauma after having cancer as a child.
The subject of void allows her to exhibit the empty space in her work as a wound. In this series space is connected to time to demonstrate how her understanding of trauma changes as she got older. To portray ageing, she uses lines to mimic tree rings, which in nature show the age of a tree.
An aim of her practice is to make the work difficult to categorise into being a painting or sculptural discipline. She is hoping to continue this project in New York this summer where she is completing a residency with the New York Academy of Art.
