Bio

Xiaoyan’s practice explores the role of eyes in modern life, making different stories to reflect the influences of surveillance and social media by drawing, painting and animation. She creates characters to represent human’s ambiguous awareness of being watched and her characters are also illustrated in different fragments of media together. Inspired by wordless novels and manga methodology, she consistently makes art that brings a surreal depiction of human experience.

Eyes

Eyeballs are the essential element, acting as a monitor, a communicator or a companion in Xiaoyan’s work. The character is trapped by the eyes as the scenes shift differently. Her work “The visit” is a series of graphic drawings about surveillance and invisible watching. It is a long-term project that will shape the narrative in different parts.

About I WANT TO SEE U

I WANT TO SEE U is an exploration of Xiaoyan’s graphic story to make the protagonist from “The visit” appear to move. The animation keeps a silent atmosphere in an oppressive space as the girl is enveloped by a variety of gazes from the paintings. The black and white drawings display a strong contrast when the scene shows the watching eyes around the space.

Paintings

Inspired by surrealist artists, Xiaoyan's paintings engage a series of figurative dreamlike scenarios with the chaos of human experience.  She describes her works as ‘different experiences of dreams’.  Her works explore the relationship between people and the eyeballs to show her world in the perversion of order. She seeks to create work that can evoke people with a plurality of curiosity and imagination.
