Project description

Beginning with the study of the sociological concept of 'liquid society', I critically examine the evolution of the definition and form of intimacy in a contemporary context influenced by mass media, ideology and technological developments. And inspired by the scientific practice of bio philosophical interpretations of human love and matching, my project explores the future matching pattern in the context of the degenerative modern love view, applying contemporary scientific research and technical possibilities in the speculative design.

Against the background of filtering indicators and eugenics mentality being increasingly reinforced in matching, the project uses a fictional narrative depicting a future technology helping the biological image system of matchmaking through odour and vision. I hope my particular imagination of genetic projection, odour kinship, and biological imagery can be used to satirise the commodification and rationalisation of love and the regression of intimacy in technological contexts.

I finally realised my conceptual idea in the form of a brand building and sensory experience ——the future love model, in which the semantics of value system in picking love can be correspondingly mapped through people's genetic sequences; and the combined genetic scents become a new calling card for the biological profile in the pairing. Thus, people can be allowed to pick their partners based on the biological information from the databases.

I wanted to depict the future by painting ironic scenes to prompt a reconsideration of how we engage with those nearest to us now under the challenges of both individual atomization and updating social patterns; as well to reclaim meaningful intimate relationships and love as a potent emotional force and intense psychological bond between people.
