Background:
The chosen site was a coastal platform on Sao Jorge Island called Faja Cumbres. It faces the sea and backs against a cliff. Some of the inhabitants of the site have large croplands and a biodiverse lagoon, which is suffering from severe eutrophic water pollution, mainly from the surrounding farmland. The premise of the design is low-impact development to ensure the normal life of residents.
It can be seen from the current situation of the site that there is very serious eutrophication on the east side of the lagoon, while the red depth in the enlarged picture on the right represents the severity of water pollution. The waterway is gradually polluted by agricultural runoff from the mountain through farmland and reaches the most serious degree when it flows into the lagoon.
Strategy:
My design is divided into six stages, the first step is to plant purification plants and establishes purification wetlands along with the most polluted areas, the second stage is moving the location of the farmland, and the third step is the establishment of a 100m buffer zones around the lagoon, The fourth stage is the development of wasteland in the buffer zone, the fifth stage is the develop the wasteland in the buffer zone is partly used as farmland and partly as a nursery, the sixth stage is planting from the nursery were moved to the less polluted waterway.
The first strategy is to plant purification plants around the waterways of agricultural runoff and set purification wetlands in the boundary zone of severely polluted farmland lagoon. The wetlands change the direction of the water body through islands, slow down the flow rate and increase the opportunity for wetland plants to purify the water body. The purification islands are blessed with Azorean Seashore Pebbles and some purifying plants to ensure that the water is filtered before it flows into the lagoon.
The second strategy is to protect the lagoon and prevent the over-exploitation of humans from affecting the biodiversity of the lagoon in the future. A buffer zone of 100m is set around the lagoon, and the habitat of 100m can well protect birds' habitat. The buffer zone is mainly divided into two categories, one is the buffer zone between the farmland and the lagoon, and the other is the buffer zone between the lagoon and the sea. The first category is mainly to prevent agricultural pollution, reduce human interference, and plant some tall plants as protective belts. At the same time, these trees also have the function of interception. After that, low-impact human participation was added, such as setting up spaces away from the lagoon in places where people are concentrated, such as the entrance, and in some places allowing people to get close to the lagoon, feel the birds, and feel the charm of the lagoon. The wooden board road is set up in the wet grassland and wetland to give people a different spatial experience. In addition, the planted plants and the purification effect of the wetland have an educational effect on people. Project statement
Another type of buffer zone is between the sea and the lagoon, mainly low-impact development, moderately increasing some human rest and activity space, such as setting up bird-watching spots on the high terrain of the site and using the stones of the abandoned land to build site-specific features bench.
The design can be used for 100 years. Research shows that the sea level of the Azores will rise by 2m in the next 100 years, and part of the coast will be submerged. There are three places with relatively low terrain that may be affected by floods. I set up a boardwalk and wet grass, it can cope with Sea level rises by 2m.
